Chelsea – The Newest Mid-Table Side in the Premier League

Given our latest debacle at Goodison Park today, it’s all but official that we’ve become a mid-table club. Especially as we have a looming transfer bin as well, and are about to lose our best player. I thought I’d take a look and see just how bad we really have been this season, especially against the different sections of the table this year. Below is a break down of what I put together:

I chose five different splits, beyond simply “Everyone”, or our normal table place. Technically the “Top 6” is really just the Top 5, as we are tail end on that animal. Top 10 is really Top 9, etc. Here are some interesting observations:

  • At home between the Top 6, Middle 8, and Bottom 6 we were worst against those Middle 8. This reeks of not taking those clubs seriously enough, and just expecting talent to win out. We prepared against the big clubs, and were good enough to ignore the bottom ones, but it seems Chelsea really is destined to be Mid Tier this season.
  • Away from home, we were still dreadful against the Middle 8, however look at that number versus the Top 6, and the Top 8. Oh. Em. Gee. We really have become Arsenal! (see 2018/19 where Arsenal only captured 16 points away from home all season).
  • When you look at the overall, we are barely better versus those Middle 8 than we are against The “Top 6”. This is shouldn’t be shocking, but seeing it broken out it really is. 6 wins from 13 is absolutely dreadful.

At this point, I don’t see us catching either Arsenal or Manchester United, let alone Spurs, in the table. 6th is our destination It seems. The bigger question isn’t whether we win the Europa or not, but rather if we do, who will be our manager in that Final?
