I wanted to see how much fluxuation and variance there is in the Premier League, from Matchweek 12 to Matchweek 38 in terms of table place. Mainly because it’s international week (yawn), and we just finished Matchweek 12 this season. Especially as this season is such a crapshoot in terms of good teams doing poorly, bad teams doing well, etc.
I put the data up on my Tableau profile at:
https://public.tableau.com/profile/robertnhanson#!/vizhome/MW12toMW38-TransitionAnalysis/Sheet1
It makes for an interesting chart
As a Chelsea supporter, my eyes first hit that column. And it should be noted, the number is the Final table position for the season, and the color is defining how much table movement there was from 12 to 38. Green means moving up, red means moving down.
For Chelsea, there’s actually normally very little movement. At least half of the seasons are in the ‘grey’ middle area, which means where Chelsea was at 12, was basically where they were at 38. I might do a follow up analysis to see who was the most and least turbulent, as we look like that latter title might apply to us. Great starts and all that.
It’s interesting to see how many clubs finish stronger after the first third is over, though, such as Everton, Tottenham, and Liverpool as well, historically. If you are on the actual Tableau page you can mouseover to see all the details for each block.
Enjoy!
