I like to see how the Top 5 European leagues are stacking up as the season goes on, and using a very simplistic algorithm of comparing points gained per match played, and when that’s equal goal differential per match played, I’ve ranked the current Top 20 teams from the Top 5 European teams:
- Premier League, Ligue 1, Bundesliga, Serie A, La Liga
The reason for the algorithm is that each league has played a different amount of matches, thus a different points won totals, different goals scored totals, etc. Obviously this doesn’t factor in league difficulty, but it’s a good way to see how each is doing in their respective league.
It’s quite interesting that out of the top 20, the league makeup is thus:
- Premier League – six teams
- Bundesliga – four teams
- Ligue 1 – four teams
- Serie A – three teams
- La Liga – three teams
Initial thoughts on this are that it’s definitely the case the Premier League has the strongest ‘top’ set of teams. And given the Bundesliga only has 18 sides, versus the 20 in the other four leagues, this is also impressive. And you have to consider that Serie A and La Liga only having three teams indicates a weaker league, and top level dominance. Although in La Liga’s case, given they ranked 8th, 12th, and 15th, that versus the other leagues La Liga might be losing ground.
One thing is definitely certain, however. PSG is an overbalanced side in their league. With a Goal Differential per match of 2.571, no one else is even close. But, if you buy enough players, with an endless money supply, that’s far more likely to happen.
